The Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd was founded by Brother Mathias Barrett in 1951, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Brother Mathias initiated our apostolic activity by operating a refuge for the care and assistance of the transient poor. It was not long before other men, embedded with similar zeal, joined Brother Mathias in his noble work.
Soon, his community began to grow and his works expanded to other cities, such as New Orleans, Miami, Philadelphia, Momence, Kansas City, Toronto and Hamilton in Canada, and Wolverhampton in England.
In the spirit of "Charity Unlimited" the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd reached out to try and promote dignity in meeting the many needs of the homeless. In addition to ministry to the homeless, the Brothers also minister to persons with mental and physical disabilities and persons living with HIV/AIDS.
At present, the Brothers’ ministries are located in Canada, the United States, England and Haiti.
Graced into existence through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and the cooperation of our founder, Brother Mathias Barrett, the religious congregation of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd earnestly strives to fulfil its mission through the evangelical consecration of its members and the lived expression of the common life.
Our existence as a congregation is for the glory of God, perfection of our members, and service to the poor and needy. "Charity Unlimited," our founder's legacy to his brothers, is expressed in our service, availability, hospitality, flexibility, adaptability and respect for life.
Our life of consecration and service must continue to inspire and motivate all who seek to involve themselves with the mission of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd.
With faith and trust in God's providence, we pledge ourselves to strive always to:
