Good Shepherd Youth Services in partnership with St. Martin’s Manor and Grace Haven opened Angela’s Place in 2008 to provide transitional housing and support to young mothers up to 21 years of age. The program helps mothers in life-skills development, infant bonding and nutrition. On-site staff support is available for mothers and their children.
Angela’s Place has 15 self-contained transitional-housing apartments. Each apartment is fully furnished. Occupants are responsible to pay rent at a subsidized rate (30% of income) as well as their hydro, telephone and cable bills.
Equipped with a community room, Angela’s Place provides on-site programming such as life-skills development (for example, cooking and budgeting), pre-employment counselling, and educational programs about healthy infant growth and development and infant play and stimulation.
Programs offered on site include holistic nutrition, infant bonding and attachment, and Ontario Early Years of Hamilton. Liaisons have also been formed with Public Health, Alternatives for Youth, LEAP (Learning, Earning and Parenting), nurse practitioners and mental health clinicians. The average length of stay is between 12 and 24 months.
The program provides support staff to residents 7 days a week, as well as after-hours on-call support. Once fully occupied, staff will be available 12 hours per day. There will also be an on-site superintendent.
