Formally known as the Men’s Centre, The Good Shepherd Centre is the Brothers of the Good Shepherd’s flagship program and perhaps the most well-known Good Shepherd program in Hamilton. It has become a beacon of hope and a symbol of shelter, sustenance and spiritual healing for thousands of men, women and children for nearly half a century.
The Good Shepherd Centre has its roots in Hamilton 1961, when Bishop Joseph F. Ryan invited the Brothers of the Good Shepherd to establish a Men’s Hostel. The original 20-bed hostel, located at 85 MacNab Street North, provided food and shelter for homeless and transient men.
By 1971, the Good Shepherd Men’s Hostel was feeding 160 men each day, although the dining room could only accommodate 60 people at a sitting. Plans were drawn up for a new facility and a building fund was established.
On November 30, 1972, Bishop Joseph F. Ryan officially opened the current facility at 135 Mary Street. Today, more than 300 people a day come to the Centre for a hot meal, and thousands are helped annually through a variety of programs and services.
