The Brother's Work in Haiti

In 1993, Br. Luc Jolicoeur, BGS, joined with a group of compassionate men and women in the United States who, like him, were moved to do something for Haiti’s orphans. With their support, the Brothers began a small mission in the Cite Soleil slum area of Port-au-Prince.

The Sheepfold of the Good Shepherd (Bercail du Bon Berger) began as an emergency food program. Before a year had passed, the Brothers began care for homeless boys – boys on the streets, boys abandoned by desperate parents. By 1995, the number of boys in care had risen to 72.

After the earthquake struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, eyewitnesses reported that the various buildings that make up the Sheepfold of the Good Shepherd had been flattened.

Then on January 15, an e-mail arrived: Br. Luc and the children had survived! When the earthquake hit at 4.53pm (local time), they had been gathered in the Cenacle (their chapel) for evening prayers. The Cenacle was damaged, and other buildings in the compound collapsed, but they escaped alive. They are currently sleeping in the yard, and Br. Luc is scrambling to get the necessities of life for the children.

You can help rebuild the Sheepfold of the Good Shepherd, a place of hope, help and survival for the children of Haiti.
