A Message from Cathy Wellwood
Once again, our hearts are warmed by the generosity of the people who reach out to us during the cold winter months, especially at Christmas. This holiday season, we at Good shepherd were astonished by the overwhelming kindness of our community.
Your support is vital to Good Shepherd achieving our vision of “working together to build healthy and resilient communities founded on the principle of social justice for all.” I am so proud and gratified that your response to our Christmas Appeal will allow us to continue to help residents of the Greater Hamilton Area who are vulnerable due to poverty, homelessness, mental illness and abuse.
They also depend on your help to get through the cold winter months. In addition to your cash donations, your gifts of food, winter clothing, personal care products and gift cards were eagerly accepted at the Venture Centre and were made available at the Christmas Marketplace over 10 days in December. We distributed over 223,000 pounds of food to more than 5,330 people, representing 2,142 households in Hamilton.
Christmas Marketplace—which we formally called the Christmas Hamper program—promoted hospitality, dignity and independence by encouraging clients to shop for the items they need in a grocery store-like setting. Visiting the Marketplace highlights the year-round demand for food and clothing throughout the city, but also illustrates the wonderful things that our donors ad volunteers do to make life a little easier for our neighbours living in poverty.
Also in December, more than 850 dedicated volunteers served up a delicious turkey dinner to 2,000 people at Good Shepherd’s Christmas Wonderland. It’s a day when we smile along with the children, knowing that your hard work and generosity is responsible for so much happiness.
I am forever grateful for your generosity and I look forward to your continuing support. Have a happy and healthy 2018!
