A Message from Cathy Wellwood

We’re two months into the new year but the glow of the Christmas season hasn’t dimmed at Good Shepherd. The kindness of thousands of people in our community grows, beginning in November, until it reaches its crescendo just days before Christmas. That feeling of gratitude and optimism never wears off.

Every day, our hearts are warmed by the generosity of people who reach out to us. Many of our neighbours, whose circumstances make them vulnerable to extreme poverty and homelessness, depend greatly on people who donate to Good Shepherd – some of whom live as far away as Niagara and Oakville.

Happily, all our programs were overwhelmed with the kindness of strangers. This year our many supporters came through for our clients in a big way. Response to our Christmas Appeal was exceptional and food, winter clothing, hygeine products, toys, gift cards – and even seasonal decorations – flooded our Venture Centre. The Venture Centre was full of hustle and bustle as we welcomed more than 200 people a day over 10 days to our Christmas Hamper Market Place. We distributed 3,100 hampers, representing 2,436 Hamilton households. The annual program is a great success, but it also illustrates the immense year-round need for emergency food and clothing throughout the city.

Also in December, more than 800 of our wonderfully dedicated volunteers served up a delicious turkey dinner to 2,000 people. Everyone enjoyed themselves – volunteers and guests alike. Despite the poverty that grips our guests, we feel privileged to show our hospitality during the holidays. It’s then that we can smile along with the children, gratified that your hard work and generosity is responsible for so much happiness. I look forward to the feelings of joy and happiness every year.

On page 3 of this newletter, we talked about the generous people who took it upon themselves to give to our organization in a very creative way. If you would like to make a donation to support any of our programs, including the emergency food program at the Venture Centre or hot meals at The Good Shepherd Centre, please call us at 905.572.6435 (905.57.ANGEL). We are happy to help you to find the best fit for your gift.

I am forever grateful for your continued generosity, especially during the Christmas season. On behalf of everyone at Good Shepherd and those we serve, thank you and I look forward to talking to you this year.

God Bless,
Cathy Wellwood
